Paula (Robertson) Cummings
I married William Cummings (SHS ’63). He asked me out for first date in senior year, when I was ordering food at HO JO’s on Route 1. Billy and I left Saugus after 65 years and moved to a small town, Hebron New Hampshire on Newfound Lake. The population is 610 and we have taken our place among the locals. We are still referred to as “flatlanders” but becoming very adjusted to the lifestyle.
Our son Mathew Cummings is a local architect (Cummings Architects) who has a passion for restoration. He has most recently completed the Alexander Knight House in Ipswich, a recreation of a 17th century English timber frame house. Melissa Byrne is a stay at home mom in Danvers, her twin sister Jodi Ruebel is a dental hygienist with Mass General. We have been blessed with 4 grandchildren Liam Cummings, Morgan Ruebel, Jamie and Riley Byrne, who make the trip to NH to stay with us frequently.
We have a great variety of pets who care for themselves; moose, deer, mink, coyote and the occasional bobcat frequents our back yard parading in front of the critter cam.
Do work with local church groups, most recently working the tents at the Hebron Fair. I am a member of the Cabin Fever Society (local Hebron women’s group that makes the winter luncheon circuit of the southern White Mountains when the weather permits). Proud contributor to Pot Luck functions with the neighbors, who live just far enough away for friendship and privacy needs.
I have spent time travelling and searching out my roots, from Scotland through to Nova Scotia and the colonies. Unfortunately, the ancestors were dropped off in Maine and not at the Iron Works, although they were on the same boat.

Carol Singer Trecartin
After graduation in 1963, I went to work for a year at the Prudential Insurance Co… disliked it so much, I decided to go to college and get my degree and was lucky to get accepted at Northeastern University…went for a 2 year stint and transferred to Keene State College ….thought I might like to be a special education teacher after my work study through Northeastern ….met my husband, got married and had 2 children who gave us five fabulous grandchildren! We divorced after 20 years and since the kids were grown, I then focused on building my Interior Design business, Carol’s Custom Draperies and teaching yoga… I actually taught yoga at Saugus High adult education for 15 years. Currently teach at NSCC and N. Reading Recreational department. So I did get to teach after all!
I was then also free to travel to England, Germany, Amsterdam, Vienna, Budapest, Belgium, Thailand, Senegal, Brazil, Hawaii, Sicily, Costa Rica, Nova Scotia, lots of islands in the Caribbean, …and one of my favorite islands…Cuba. I still have a sense of wanderlust and will continue traveling.
Along the way, I learned how to dance and spend lots of fun time on the dance floor. I got into African drumming after my YogaDance training and find it helps with the dancing, although I’m not very good at either one.
I recently took up making beaded jewelry, just for the creativity and hope to get a website up and running soon.
I’m happy to still be around for our 50th class reunion, as I recently almost croaked after a serious car accident last September while visiting my brother in Albuquerque.
It will be great to connect with everyone after all these years!

Wayne Hitchings
Anchorage, AK
Wayne’s 97 year old mother is living in Anchorage.
He is married to Glenda Dodson and they have one daughter Jennifer. His son Garth is from his first marriage to Charlene Crowell (SHS’64). They have 3 granddaughters.
After school, Wayne worked for “Ma Bell” throughout New England, but Uncle Sam desired his presence more. He was stationed for 2 years at a Nike Hercules Missile site in Queens and then transferred to Anchorage, Alaska. The opportunities of the North made him want to call it home. Departing the military, Wayne photographed in Mt. McKinley Park for a season and then he proceeded to work at a commercial glass company.
He then started his own glazing company, began flying, and then sailing. After sailing for 2 years to the South Pacific and returning to Alaska, he started a second business--supplying commercial doors and hardware. The company is managed by his daughter Jennifer due to his schedule outside of Alaska.
Wayne’s continued interest in gems and minerals has given him the excuse to world travel extensively. Currently his time is split between Alaska and Oregon after developing a 485 acre wine vineyard in the Umpqua Valley region. The vineyard is mainly planted with pinot noir and seven other varietals. The majority of grapes are sold to other wineries with a small portion used for wines in his tasting room facility.
Wayne is looking forward to the 2013 harvest and the release of his 09 champagne. Cheers!

Jim Murphy
After graduation from SHS, I enlisted in the USAF where I was placed in a special forces K-9 unit. I deployed to Vietnam for a one-year tour of duty where I was stationed at Bien Hoa air base north of Saigon from 1967-1968. During that time, I became pen pals with a girl my sister worked with at Logan airport, and we just celebrated our 44th wedding anniversary this past June—so, we both blame my sister Donna.
Upon my return to the USA, I was assigned to a Presidential security squadron in Washington, D.C. for Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon while finishing out my enlistment. I then returned to school on the GI bill and graduated ‘Sigma Cum Lucky” from Boston University. I went to work for GE in Lynn and spent the next 33 years as a manager there. I have been retired for 11 years now and my wife, Regina, and I live in Reading, MA.
My wife and I have raised two wonderful children, our daughter Karen (a Reading Memorial H.S teacher) and our son Jim (an account manager for EMC). We have 5 beautiful grandchildren—four boys and one girl. They all live in Reading and that has given us the opportunity to develop great relationships with the grandkids. Bonding with these kids is the thing we cherish most in life. I spent a great deal of my time in the pool at the YMCA in Reading teaching all of them to swim.
At SHS I played football and wore the number 12. My son Jim carried on the tradition by wearing #12 during his football career as a quarterback at Reading Memorial High School, Northeastern University, and the New England Patriots.
My hobbies consist of Competitive Trap Shooting, fishing, and—since my wife worked in the airline industry—traveling the world.
